Medical Physics - Radiation Physics

OBJECT AND GOAL

The aim of the course  is:

(a) the provision of postgraduate education in the field of Medical Physics – Radiation Physics to Higher Education (AEI) graduates of Physics and scientists with studies related to Medical Sciences, with a view to establish a national safety culture in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. 

(b) the specialization of graduates with a University degree in Physics in the field of Medical Physics – Radiation Physics through the provision of postgraduate training, which is a precondition for the acquisition of a Professional License of Medical Physicist – Radiation Physicist in Medicine, according to applicable legislation.

The Radiation Protection Regulations define as a precondition for the operation of ionizing radiation medical laboratories (diagnostic radiology, radiotherapeutic and nuclear medicine laboratories) the employment of Medical Physicists – Radiation Physicists in Medicine as radiation protection officers and medical physics experts. With a view to acquire a Professional License of Medical Physicist – Radiation Physicist (MP-RP), a graduate holding a Physics diploma and n MSc course in Medical Physics, has to be adequately knowledgeable in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation physics applications, in order to contribute to the promotion and protection of health, focusing, among others, on the radiation protection of patients, employees, the general population and the environment from the medical applications of radiation. Medical Physicist – Radiation Physicist in Medicine education has to be compatible to the competencies and obligations of a  Medical Physicist, as defined by the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), of a Medical Physics Expert and of a Radiation Protection Expert, as defined by the Basic Safety Standards of the International Atomic Energy Association, the European Legislation and the national legislation.

All graduates must have basic knowledge on radiation in the fields of industry, research and education. Graduates cover the existing needs both in the field of healthcare, and in other fields that are directly related to radiation physics and radiation protection of humans and environment, such as industrial and research applications of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, nuclear security, management of radioactive materials, etc. Furthermore, the MSc course in Medical Physics – Radiation Physics aims at the creation of scientists who are capable of being assigned as experts or radiation protection officers in public services, such as those falling under the Hellenic Ministry of Health, regulatory and inspective authorities, such as the Greek Atomic Energy Commission, and research centers, such as the National Center for Scientific Research NCSR “Demokritos”, etc.

Cooperation with the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and NCSR “Demokritos” gives the opportunity for the education of postgraduate students specialized in regulative and auditing radiation protection framework, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, safety control of radiation production and measurement devices, nuclear technology, safety and security, production of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, environmental radiation, patients’ and personnel’s radiation protection, management of radioactive waste, dealing with nuclear or radiology emergencies, etc. These centers are recruited with specialized scientific personnel, logistical infrastructure and know-how for the provision of high level education in the aforementioned fields.
